About the ListThe National Library of Medicine has in its collection 90 Western manuscripts written before 1601. Cataloging information for these manuscripts is fragmented and in some cases unavailable to the scholarly community. The following short-title list is intended as a means of providing access to these manuscripts until they are added to NLM's online catalog, LocatorPlus. Many of NLM's manuscripts are recorded in Dorothy M. Schullian and Francis E. Sommer, A Catalogue of Incunabula and Manuscripts in the Army Medical Library (1950) and Seymour De Ricci and W. J. Wilson, Census of Medieval and Renaissance Manuscripts in the United States (1935-1940), supplemented by C. U. Faye and W. H. Bond, Supplement to the Census of Medieval and Renaissance Manuscripts in the United States and Canada (1962). Manuscripts added to the Library's collection since 1950 are not recorded in Schullian and Sommer. The 14 manuscripts added since 1962 are not recorded in the Census. This short-title list provides the following information:
Although this short-title list is the only complete listing of all NLM's early Western manuscripts, it does not contain complete cataloging information. The Census of De Ricci, et al., and Schullian and Sommer must still be searched for essential information. Reference Librarian |
