Camping Along Ruby-Horsethief:
Please sign up for a campsite at the Loma boat launch to camp in the river corridor. Camping is allowed anywhere along the river corridor except where excluded by signage, within ½ mile of eagle nesting zones, and on private land. The BLM has cleared, improved, and marked all accessible and appropriate sites. All camping is primitive in nature. A voluntary campsite sign-in system constitutes neither a permit nor a reservation, nor does it grant exclusive use. It is an ‘Information Only’ system for other boaters.
Campsites are available to be shared by multiple parties up to the capacity of that site. Campsites are not first come, first served exclusively to the first group. This system is intended to provide information to boaters on finding a camp site by knowing how many other campers are already down-river and where those boaters intend to camp. No camper has the right to tell another camper that they already have this site reserved and that they must move along. On weekends and especially during holiday periods, it is unlikely that you will experience a private camping experience, especially at the more popular camping destinations such as Black Rocks. Leave your site better than you found it. Your best tools for a positive river experience are friendliness and flexibility. The only other way to manage river use and camping is a permit system. If you don’t use the sign-in system, it won’t work.
The Ruby-Horsethief stretch of the Colorado River has 24 designated primitive-backcountry sites.
