U.S. Department of Labor announces grant exceeding $771,000 to assist workers in Missouri affected by automotive industry layoffs

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Labor today announced a $771,713 National Emergency Grant increment award to assist workers affected by automotive layoffs from Chrysler LLC in Fenton, Mo.; Integram St. Louis Seating in Pacific, Mo.; and Yushin USA in Kirksville, Mo. This funding represents the second and final installment of a $1,730,321 grant approved on April 23, 2008.

"These funds will allow affected workers to continue to access the services needed to prepare for new jobs in high-demand regional industries," said Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis. "As the career development needs of these workers persist, so does the Department of Labor's commitment to meeting these needs."

The April 2008 award was designed to serve 506 workers. A Sept.15, 2008, modification to the award increased the number of workers eligible for services to 1,200. The purpose of today's funding is to continue the delivery of career services to eligible workers affected by layoffs at the plants named.

On Nov. 2, 2007, Chrysler LLC announced that it would be eliminating the second shift at its Fenton plant, affecting approximately 1,078 workers. As a result, Chrysler suppliers Integram St. Louis Seating and Yushin USA Ltd. also announced layoffs.

National Emergency Grants are part of the secretary of labor's discretionary fund and are awarded based on a state's ability to meet specific guidelines. For more information, visit http://www.doleta.gov/NEG/.
