All figures are in US$ millions. The above statistics are unofficial estimates, extracted from Hong Kong Census and Statistics Department and other sources.
Hong Kong’s electronic parts and components imports in 2008 totaled US$138 billion, a 5.3% increase over 2007. The value of U.S. electronic parts and components exports to Hong Kong was US$5.6 billion in 2008, representing a 2% decrease over 2007. Most of Hong Kong’s imports are re-exported to the manufacturing sector in China, especially to the Pearl River Delta region. Macau is not a significant importer of electronic parts or components.
Best Prospects/Services
Hong Kong imports a wide range of semiconductors, electronic parts and components, particularly for computers, telecommunications equipment, teleTels, toys, games, watches /clocks, and audio/visual equipment. Best prospects include integrated circuits, switches, diodes, transistors, semiconductors, capacitors, printed circuits, and parts for audio/visual, computers and telecommunications equipment.
Opportunities
Due to the global economic downturn, worldwide demand for electronics products/equipment is expected to decline in 2009, however this remains a significant market sector for U.S. suppliers. Forecasts for the 2009 worldwide IC market from various market research firms range from -6% to -16%. China, being one of the key world electronic manufacturing services providers (expected to account for 76% of all EMS output in Asia and 54% worldwide by 2010) will suffer from the slowdown of worldwide spending. Since Hong Kong plays an important role in component exports to mainland China (70% of Hong Kong’s total exports of electronic parts and components in 2008 went to China, totaling approximately US$95 billion), the shipments of electronic parts and components into Hong Kong will be directly affected by the global slowdown. Based on the downward forecasts, the shipment of electronics parts and components into China will drop in 2009 anywhere from 6% to 10%.
