This devastating earthquake was the culmination of a series of tremors generally felt in the island areas during the previous week. Seventy-one people were killed, nearly 3,000 buildings and 14 bridges were destroyed on Sanana by the earthquake and accompanying tsunami. The tsunami also caused damage on Buru and Mangole.
