Categories of Safety and Health Awards

Departmental Safety and Health Awards Program

The Departmental Safety and Health Awards Program is administered under the guidelines of the general Department awards and Recognition Program. Supervisors  are encouraged to reward employees and stimulate interest in accident prevention and to promote safety in the workplace.  In addition to the Safety-specific awards below, supervisors and employees are encouraged to nominate worthy employees for the Department awards listed in DM Chapter 451.

Safety and Health Excellence Award

  • Purpose: The Safety and Health Excellence Award (formerly the Award of Merit) recognizes employees throughout the Department who contributed in an outstanding manner to the Department’s Safety and Occupational Health Program. Employees would be recognized for demonstrating outstanding commitment to improving employee and/or visitor health and safety.
  • Award Authorities: The Department of the Interior Safety Awards program is governed by 370 DM 451 and 485 DM 10. 
  • Award Justification: This award recognizes and demonstrates management’s high regard for the DOI employees who have made unusual and significant contributions toward the achievement of positive results in the advancement of security, safety, and health in DOI.
  • Award Criteria:
    • Create a safety and health culture inclusive of all employees and activities.
    • Improve our ability to identify and abate unsafe conditions and practices.
    • Implement effective safety and health resourcing strategies.
    • Facilitate accountability and improvement through evaluation and monitoring.
    • Increase organizational safety and health awareness and program communication.
  • Eligible Award Recipients:
    • Managers and supervisors who have implemented the Department’s safety and health program in their jurisdictions in an outstanding manner, developing appropriate written and oral policies, plans and programs.
    • Employees whose primary work is not in safety and health, but whose superior accomplishments have advanced the cause of safety and health.
    • Employees with full-time or collateral duty safety and health responsibilities who have achieved outstanding results in furthering safety and health.
  • Recommendation and Approval Process:
    • The nominations should be prepared on a DI-451 (United States Department Of TheInterior Recommendation And Approval Of Awards),  The awards are presented at the U.S. Department of the Interior Honor Awards Convocation.
    • Any DOI employee may submit a nomination, but the the nomination and supporting documents must be prepared and submitted through supervisory channels to the appropriate bureau awards coordinator for review.

Organizational Awards

Organizational Award of Merit

  • Purpose: This award is presented to organizations for outstanding safety and occupational health program achievement. The Organizational Award of Merit recognizes an organization that has performed a service for, or made a contribution of unusual value to the Department, bureau, or offices’ overall Safety and Occupational Health Program.  The organization’s endeavors must have contributed towards the establishment of a safe and healthful environment by having built a safety and health culture that will move the Department toward the goal of zero loss to human and material resources.  This award is similar to the Safety and Health Achievement Award; however it recognizes efforts that are more bureau/office based and have less of a national impact.
  • Award Authorities: The Department of the Interior Safety Awards program is governed by 370 DM 451 and 485 DM 10. 
  • Award Justification: This award recognizes and demonstrates management’s high regard for the DOI organizations that have made unusual and significant contributions toward the achievement of positive results in the advancement of security, safety, and health in DOI bureaus and offices.
  • Award Criteria:
    • Create a safety and health culture that strives for the prevention of accidents that may cause serious injuries or fatalities.
    • Improve their organizations’ ability to identify and abate unsafe conditions and practices.
    • Implement innovative work practices that enhance the bureau or office’s safety and health program awareness.
    • Facilitate accountability and improvement through evaluation and monitoring.
    • Develop risk-reduction methods and promote managerial action to lessen human and material resource loss.
    •  Advocate for the identification and control of safety, health, and environmental hazards.
  • Eligible Award Recipients:
    • All DOI bureau and office organizational components are eligible nominees for the award either individually o collectively.
  • Recommendation and Approval Process:
    • The nominations should be prepared on a DI-451 (United States Department Of The Interior Recommendation And Approval Of Awards),  The awards are presented at the bureau or office’s Safety Week Ceremony by Deputy Assistant Secretary, the Director, or their designee.
    • Any DOI employee may submit a nomination, but the nomination and supporting documents must be prepared and submitted through supervisory channels to the appropriate bureau awards coordinator for review.

Safety and Health Achievement Award

  • Purpose: It is the highest level organizational safety and occupational health award granted. The Safety and Health Achievement Award recognizes an organization that has performed an outstanding service for, or made a contribution of unusual value to the Department’s overall Safety and Occupational Health Program.  The organization’s endeavors must have contributed towards the establishment of a safe and healthful environment within the Department of the Interior by having built a safety and health culture that will move the Department toward the goal of zero loss to human and material resources.

Professional Service Award

Although the Professional Service Award is described in 370 DM 451.3, the award has been discontinued.  Employees and supervisors should be encouraged to nominate employees with a distinguished career in the safety arena for the Superior, Meritorious or Distinguished Service awards as described in 370 DM 451.3
