Two cyclones hit eastern India during October 1999: one cyclone around the 15th, the other around the 29th. The second cyclone was a super typhoon with winds in excess of 160 mph. Preliminary reports indicated that over 3,400 people have died from the storm. Elsewhere around the globe, eastern areas of the U.S., for the second month in a row, received heavy rainfall associated with tropical systems. Hurricane Irene dumped heavy rains across portions of Florida and North Carolina, while areas in the central Plains continued to be drier than the long term mean. Refer to the climate perspectives reports, listed above, for more details and analyses.
