REL 2007014 English Language Proficiency Assessment in the Pacific Region
Using various approaches to identify English language learners, several Pacific Region jurisdictions are developing English language proficiency standards and assessments aligned with those standards. Others are working on content standards, including language arts, and have expressed interest in developing English language proficiency standards but lack formal assessment mechanisms.

The Condition of Education 2005 summarizes important developments and trends in education using the latest available data. The report presents 40 indicators on the status and condition of education and a special analysis of the mobility of elementary and secondary school teachers. The indicators represent a consensus of professional judgment on the most significant national measures of the condition and progress of education for which accurate data are available. The 2005 print edition includes 40 indicators in six main areas: (1) enrollment trends and student characteristics at all levels of the education system from elementary education to adult learning; (2) student achievement and the longer term, enduring effects of education; (3) student effort and rates of progress through the educational system among different population groups; (4) the contexts of elementary and secondary education in terms of courses taken, teacher characteristics, and other factors; (5) the contexts of postsecondary education; and (6) societal support for learning, including parental and community support for learning, and public and private financial support of education at all levels.

NCES 1999462 NAEP 1998 Writing: Report Card for the Nation and the States
This report presents the results of the NAEP 1998 writing assessment for the nation and for participating states and jurisdictions. Students' performance on the assessment is described in terms of their average writing score on a 0-to-300 scale and in terms of the percentage of students attaining each of three achievement levels: Basic, Proficient, and Advanced. In addition to providing average scores and achievement level performance for the nation and 39 states and other jurisdictions, this report provides results for subgroups of students defined by various background and contextual characteristics. A summary of major findings for the NAEP 1998 writing assessment is presented as well as a summary of the assessment content.

This report provides a first look at the results of the NAEP 1998 writing assessment. Each participating jurisdiction receives its own customized State Report similar in format. This overview provides basic information on NAEP and the overall results for public schools in tabular form, as well as comparisons of the state with that of other participating states and jurisdictions in graphic form. It describes the assessment, the sample of students assessed, the metrics for reporting student performance, and how the differences in student performance are reported.

NCES 97095 NAEP 1994 Trends in Academic Progress
This report provides additional data about trends in science, mathematics, reading, and writing. These results chart trends going back to the first year in which each NAEP assessment was given: 1969/70 in science; 1973 in mathematics; 1971 in reading; and 1984 in writing. In science, mathematics, and reading, students were assessed at ages 9, 13, and 17. For the writing portion of the assessments, testing was done by grade rather than age, at grades 4, 8, and 11.

NCES 97583 Report in Brief: NAEP 1994 Trends in Academic Progress
This report presents results of the NAEP 1994 trend assessments in science, mathematics, reading, and writing. To provide a numeric summary of students' performance on the assessment questions and tasks, NAEP uses a 0 to 500 scale for each subject area. Comparisons of average scale scores are provided across the years in which trend assessments have been administered and among subpopulations of students. National representative samples totaling approximately 31,000 students were involved in the NAEP 1994 trend assessments.
