WWC IRCELQ06 Lions Quest—Skills for Action
Skills for Action, a program to build positive character values and life and citizenship skills for students in grades 9–12, includes classroom lessons and service learning. The program, with more than 100 lessons focused around 26 personal, social, and thinking skills, ranges from one semester to four years in length. Students explore personal stories highlighting values and behavior through teachers’ questions and group discussion and resource pages in the curricular materials. For service learning, students perform school-based or community-based projects and reflect on their experiences. Optional components include a student magazine, an Advisory Team, and supplemental units on drug use prevention. A related program is reviewed in the What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) intervention report on Skills for Adolescence.

NCES 2005150 Baccalaureate and Beyond Longitudinal Study 1993/2003 Data Analysis System (DAS) On-line
The DAS contains data from the 2003 Baccalaureate and Beyond Longitudinal Study (B&B:1993/2003). This study is the third follow-up of a national sample of students who completed bachelor degrees in academic year 1992-1993 and were first surveyed as part of the National Postsecondary Student Aid Study. This DAS allows users to conduct analyses on data gathered in this study while on-line via the web.

NCES 2006166 1993/03 Baccalaureate and Beyond Longitudinal Study (B&B:93/03) Methodology Report
This report describes the procedures and results of the full-scale implementation of the B&B:93/03 study. Students who earned a bachelor's degree in 1992-93 were first interviewed in 1993 and then subsequently in 1994 and 1997. This is the final follow-up interview of the B&B:93 cohort, 10 years following completion of the bachelor's degree. The results of this study offer an opportunity to assess the value of a baccalaureate degree at a time when sample members are becoming established in their careers. Specific topics of interest include length of time to complete a baccalaureate degree, the pursuit of additional postsecondary education beyond a bachelor's degree, and employment outcomes.

NCES 2004365 Statistics in Brief: Volunteer Service by Young People From High School Through Early Adulthood
This Statistics in Brief examines the patterns and characteristics of individual involvement in community service activities from high school through early adulthood. Using data from the National Education Longitudinal Study of 1988 (NELS:88), this Brief describes the characteristics of young adults who volunteered, when they volunteered, why they volunteered, and for which types of organizations they volunteered. Based on data from the NELS:88 1992 sample of 12th-grade students—who were asked about their high school volunteer service for the period 1990–92 and then re-interviewed in 1994 and again in 2000—this Brief also examines whether high school volunteer service was related to volunteering 2 years and 8 years after their scheduled high school graduation.

NCES 2002152 National Postsecondary Student Aid Study 1999-2000 [NPSAS:2000] Methodology Report
This report describes the methods and procedures used for the 2000 National Postsecondary Student Aid Study (NPSAS:2000). NPSAS:2000 is a comprehensive study of financial aid among postsecondary education students in the United States and Puerto Rico that provides information on trends in financial aid and on the ways in which families pay for postsecondary education. NPSAS:2000 included important changes from previous NPSAS surveys (conducted in 1987, 1990, 1993, and 1996) in its sample design and collection of data. For example, the current study is the first to utilize a Web-based computer-assisted data entry (Web-CADE) system for student record abstraction. However, sufficient comparability in survey design and instrumentation was maintained to ensure that important comparisons with past NPSAS studies could be made.

The Condition of Education summarizes important developments and trends in education using the latest available data. The report, which is required by law, is an indicator report intended for a general audience of readers who are interested in education. The indicators represent a consensus of professional judgment on the most significant national measures of the condition and progress of education for which accurate data are available. The 2002 print edition includes 44 indicators in six main areas: (1) enrollment trends and student characteristics at all levels of the education system from preprimary education to adult learning; (2) student achievement and the longer term, enduring effects of education; (3) student effort and rates of progress through the educational system among different population groups; (4) the quality of elementary and secondary education in terms of courses taken, teacher characteristics, and other factors; (5) the context of postsecondary education; (6) and societal support for learning, including parental and community support for learning, and public and private financial support of education at all levels. This edition also includes special analyses on the environment, climate, and student outcomes at private schools and on the enrollment and persistence of nontraditional undergraduates.

NCES 2002005REV CD-ROM: National Household Education Surveys of 1991, 1993, 1995, 1996, and 1999: Data Files and Electronic Codebook
This 2 CD set contains all of the public release data associated with the National Household Education Survey (NHES) collections conducted in the 1990s (1991-1999). The CDs contain data collected as part of 13 random-digit dial (RDD) household surveys about parent involvement in their children's education, early childhood education, adult education, school readiness of young children, school safety and discipline, and civic education. Data documentation is provided for each file, and software is also included to help users navigate the data sets and produce extract files to be used with statistical programs such as SPSS, SAS or Stata.

NCES 2000079 National Household Education Survey of 1999 Data Files
Three surveys were conducted for the NHES: 1999: the Parent Survey (Parent-NHES: 1999), the Youth Survey (Youth-NHES: 1999) and the Adult Education Survey (AE-NHES: 1999). Data files for NHES: 1999 that were downloaded or shipped prior to June 1st, 2001 contain weights that have subsequently been revised and need to be replaced. Please follow the link below, at “On-line Availability,” for more information. Also, please note that the Data File User’s Manuals and Methodology Report for NHES: 1999 have not been revised to reflect the adjustment to the survey weights. As a result, data users should not use the weighted response rates or weighted frequencies that appear in these reports. The data files and documentation for NHES: 1999 can be downloaded from this website.

NCES 1999043 Service-Learning and Community Service in K-12 Public Schools
Service-learning, discussed here in terms of incorporating community service experiences into students' school work, has long been viewed as a positive education reform option. Beginning in the 1970s, educators began paying more attention to this teaching option and the 1990s saw an array of initiatives to help promote the practice. To determine how extensive the practice is, NCES conducted the first national-level study of service-learning in America's K-12 public schools in the spring of 1999. Analysis of this study reveals a number of interesting results including the fact that roughly one-third of these schools have incorporated service-learning to some extent and that most of the schools that have service-learning provide teachers some sort of support to help them integrate service into their curriculum.

NCES 1999007 Indicator of the Month: Community Service Participation of Students in Grades 6-12
In 1996 about one half of students in grades 6-12 participated in community service, with 26 percent participating on a regular basis. Students were more likely to participate if their parents did so.
