Title: Sustainable Biological Phosphorous Removal: A New Theory to Meet Increasingly Stringent Effluent Discharge Requirements
University of California-Davis students will work to develop a more efficient method of removing phosphorous from wastewater. Phosphorus acts as a nutrient in bodies of water and excess levels can lead to eutrophication (an abundance of algal growth uses up the water’s oxygen and suffocates all other life). They plan to study an alternative to the current method of removal that more accurately incorporates the interactions of microbes in a real wastewater environment.
