ORLEANS PARISH MAN SENTENCED TO OVER 6 YEARS IN FEDERAL PRISON FOR DRUG CHARGES

April 1, 2009

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WILLARD WHITE, age 22, a resident of New Orleans, Louisiana, was sentenced in federal court today by U. S. District Judge Sarah Vance to over six years (78 months) after being convicted of possession of crack cocaine announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten today. In addition to the term of imprisonment, Judge Vance ordered that WHITE be placed on three (3) years of supervised release following the term of imprisonment, during which time the defendant will be under federal supervision and risks an additional term of imprisonment should she violate any terms of her supervised release.

According to court documents, on November 10, 2008, a federal jury convicted WHITE after a one-day trial of possession of 5 or more grams of cocaine base. Evidence presented at trial proved that WHITE was detained for an illegal traffic maneuver in Algiers on October 8, 2007 and during a subsequent search by law enforcement, WHITE was found to be in possession of approximately 31 grams of crack cocaine hidden in his pants and an AK 47 semi-automatic rifle.

This case was investigated by Special Agents of the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives along with the New Orleans Police Department and was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Tony Gordon Sanders, Brian Capitelli and Edward J. Rivera of the Violent Crime Unit.
