Press Release

RECIDIVIST OFFENDER SENTENCED TO 327 MONTHS

January 23, 2009

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

R. Alexander Acosta, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, and Hugo Barrera, Special Agent in Charge, Bureau of Alcohol, Firearms, Tobacco, and Explosives (ATF), announced that defendant Robert Samuel Young, 60, previously convicted of three murders, was sentenced today to a term of 327months’ imprisonment on charges of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

According to the 19-page Sentencing Memorandum filed with the Court, Young was sentenced locally (Miami-Dade and Broward County) for three murders. These sentences were concurrent to each other and were ordered to end simultaneously with a separate Oklahoma federal sentence of 10 years Young had received on a charge of conspiracy to import cocaine. Young absconded from the parole supervision portion of the Oklahoma sentence and relocated to South Florida. When Young was arrested in Florida for absconding, he was in possession of two pistols.

While in federal custody in Miami, Young placed telephone calls to a criminal associate who had an assault rifle owned by Young. Young, in coded language, asked his associate to use the assault rifle to retaliate against the person whom Young suspected had helped law enforcement to find him. These coded telephone calls between Young and his associate were recorded by the prison. Based on the recorded calls, a search warrant was obtained and Young’s assault rifle was seized. Young was subsequently charged in this District with being a felon in possession of an assault rifle. He was convicted after trial on November 10, 2008.

Acosta commended the extraordinary investigative effort of agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Acosta also thanked the Bureau of Prisons for their assistance in this case. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Don Chase.
