FOUR BAHAMIAN NATIONALS AND ONE LAUDERHILL RESIDENT CHARGED IN PALM BEACH COCAINE SMUGGLING VENTURE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

R. Alexander Acosta, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, Mark R. Trouville, Special Agent in Charge, Drug Enforcement Administration, Anthony V. Mangione, Special Agent in Charge, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Office of Investigation, announce that defendants Calvin Roberts, 34, Phillip Curry, 30, Michael Roberts, 29, and Anton Jones, 30, all from the Bahamas, and Johnacio Smith, 33, of Lauderhill, FL, were charged in a federal criminal complaint on January 13, 2009, for their participation in the importation of approximately 92 kilograms of cocaine from the Bahamas into Palm Beach County, in violation of Title 21, United States Code, Sections 952, 963, and 906(b)(1)(B).

According to the complaint, on Sunday, January 11, 2009, a Wellcraft vessel was stopped in the Palm Beach Inlet by officers of the Palm Beach Police Department. A subsequent search of the vessel revealed packages of cocaine hidden in the vessel. Subsequently arrested on the vessel were Calvin Roberts and Curry. Subsequent investigation led to the arrests of Michael Roberts, Jones, and Smith.

U.S. Attorney Acosta commended the joint investigative efforts of officers and agents from the Palm Beach Police Department, the Drug Enforcement Administration and ICE. The case is being handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Karen Atkinson.
