FIVE ARRESTED AND CHARGED IN CONNECTION WITH BRINKS ARMORED CAR ROBBERY

R. Alexander Acosta, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, Jonathan I. Solomon, Special Agent in Charge, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Amos Rojas, Jr., Special Agent in Charge, Florida Department of Law Enforcement, and Robert Parker, Director, Miami-Dade Police Department, announced the arrests of defendants Angel Hernandez, 31, of Miami, Humberto Diaz, 36, of Hialeah, Yudinis Diaz, 35, of Hialeah, Frank Perez, 41, of Hialeah, and Yuri Perez, 44, of Hialeah, on federal robbery charges stemming from the armed robbery of a Brinks armored vehicle in the early morning of Thursday, December 4, 2008, in Miami. Detention hearings are scheduled for December 18, 2008 at 10:00 am.

According to the complaint filed in the case, on December 4, 2008, at approximately 6:30 a.m., a Brinks armored vehicle arrived at the Publix Supermarket located at 8241 West Flagler Street, Miami, Florida to deliver money. As the Brinks messenger was returning to the armored car, two men, one brandishing a pistol, approached him and forced him into the rear of the armored vehicle. They restrained the messenger with plastic tie wraps and took his firearm. They instructed the driver, Angel Hernandez, to drive away according to directions they were providing him. Once at a new location, they restrained the driver and took his firearm. The assailants offloaded the money and drove away in a their own vehicle.

Working through the day and night, federal and local investigators gathered evidence. The driver, Angel Hernandez admitted his involvement, named other participates and cooperated with authorities. Investigators tracked down the remaining suspects, who also admitted their involvement. All defendants are expected to make their initial appearance in federal court today. Two of the suspects, Angel Hernandez and Humberto Diaz, are Brinks employees.

The complaint filed today charges the defendants with one count of conspiracy to commit robbery, one count of robbery, and one count of possessing a firearm in furtherance of a crime. If convicted, the defendants face a maximum of 20 years in prison for each count of robbery, plus a consecutive 5 years on the firearm count.

Mr. Acosta commended the efforts of the FBI, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the Miami-Dade Police Department, and the various other state and local law enforcement agencies involved in the case. This case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Michael E. Gilfarb.
