General Description
    OSHA IMIS Code Number: 2587

NIOSH, Registry of Toxic Effects (RTECS) Identification Number: ZC2550000

NIOSH Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards, Welding fumes: chemical description, physical properties, potentially hazardous incompatibilities, and more
Exposure Limits
National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Recommended Exposure Limit (REL): Appendix A - NIOSH Potential Occupational Carcinogens
Health Factors
International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) carcinogenic classification: Group 2B, possibly carcinogenic to humans [82 KB, PDF]

    Literature Basis:
    • [No authors listed]: Welding. IARC Monogr. Eval. Carcinog. Risks Hum. 49: 447-, 1990. [82 KB, PDF]
Monitoring Methods used by OSHA
    Laboratory Sampling/Analytical Method:

    • sampling media: Mixed Cellulose Ester Filter (MCEF) 0.8 microns
maximum volume: 960 Liters   minimum volume: 480 Liters   maximum flow rate: 2.0 L/min (TWA)
current analytical method: Inductively Coupled Argon Plasma; ICP/DCP-AES
method reference: OSHA Analytical Method (OSHA ID-125G)
      method classification: Fully Validated
note: Multi-element analysis for 13 metals is possible on a single filter. The metals are: Cobalt, Beryllium, Molybdenum, Cadmium Chromium, Copper, Iron, Manganese, Nickel, Lead, Antimony Vanadium and Zinc. Metal Oxide compounds are reported for the convenience of the industrial hygienist and are based on the elemental concentration multiplied by the appropriate gravimetric conversion factor. If the total weight of sample needs to be determined, evaluate gravimetrically using the method for Particulates not otherwise regulated (Total Dust). It is all right to submit Low Ash Polyvinyl Chloride (LAPVC) filters for ICP analysis after doing the Gravimetric analysis.
