|
General Description
Synonyms: Sulfur difluoride dioxide; Vikane®
OSHA IMIS Code Number: 2323
Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) Registry Number: 2699-79-8
NIOSH, Registry of Toxic Effects (RTECS) Identification Number: WT5075000
Department of Transportation Regulation Number (49 CFR 172.101) and Guide: 2191 123
NIOSH Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards, Sulfuryl Fluoride: chemical description, physical properties, potentially hazardous incompatibilities, and more
Exposure Limits
OSHA Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) for General Industry: 29 CFR 1910.1000 Z-1 Table -- 5 ppm, 20 mg/m3 TWA
OSHA Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) for Construction Industry: 29 CFR 1926.55 Appendix A -- 5 ppm, 20 mg/m3 TWA
OSHA Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) for Maritime: 29 CFR 1915.1000 Table Z-Shipyards -- 5 ppm, 20 mg/m3 TWA
American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) Threshold Limit Value (TLV): 5 ppm, 21 mg/m3 TWA; 10 ppm, 42 mg/m3 STEL
National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Recommended Exposure Limit (REL): 5 ppm, 20 mg/m3 TWA; 10 ppm, 40 mg/m3 STEL
Health Factors
NIOSH Immediately Dangerous To Life or Health Concentration (IDLH): 200 ppm
Potential symptoms: Conjunctivitis; rhinitis; pharyngitis; cough, dyspnea, pulmonary edema (may be delayed); nausea, vomiting; weakness; tremor, convulsions; paresthesia; decreased sense of smell; frostbite (from liquid).
Health Effects: Acute lung damage---pulmonary edema (HE11); Acute CNS effects (HE4)
Affected organs: Eyes, skin, respiratory system, CNS, kidneys
Notes: 1) No pharmacokinetic studies were found in the literature, but individuals exposed to high levels of sulfuryl fluoride had elevated serum fluoride concentrations. 2) Repeated exposure of rats and rabbits (100-600 ppm) resulted in dose-related renal toxicity only in rats, and no evidence for kidney toxicity has been reported in fumigation workers.
