CALIFORNIA MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO FEDERAL CHARGE OF FAILING TO MAKE SUPPORT PAYMENTS FOR CHILD IN KANSAS

WICHITA, KAN. – Christopher L. Mason, 30, Modesto, Calif, pleaded guilty to one count of failing to pay child support for a child in Kansas, U.S. Attorney Eric Melgren announced Tuesday.

In his plea admitted that in 1998 the Sumner County District Court ordered him to make support payments for a child born in 1995. As of April 1, 2008, Mason was living in California and owed more than $10,000 in back child support for the child in Kansas.

Under the Child Support Recovery Act, it is a federal crime under certain circumstances to willfully fail to pay child support for a child living in another state. More information is available from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services at www.acf.hhs.gov.

Mason is set for sentencing Dec. 19, 2008. He faces a maximum penalty of 2 years in federal prison and a fine up to $250,000, as well as restitution. Melgren commended the Department of Health and Human Services - Inspector General and Assistant U.S. Attorney Lanny Welch for their work on the case.
