KANSAS CITY, KANSAS MAN SENTENCED TO 15 YEARS ON DRUG, FIREARM CHARGES

KANSAS CITY, KAN. – Keith D. Mays, 24, Kansas City, Kan., has been sentenced to 180 months in federal prison for drug trafficking and firearms violations.

Mays pleaded guilty in July to one count of possession with intent to distribute 50 grams or more of crack cocaine and one count of carrying a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.

In his plea, Mays admitted that he and co-defendant Dajuan A. Minor, 22, Kansas City, Kan., were arrested Feb. 3, 2007, when they were stopped by Kansas City, Kan. Police officers near 7th and Central for a traffic violation.

Officers were searching the vehicle when Mays and Minor fled the scene on foot. Officer pursued them and took them into custody. A search of the vehicle turned up 63 grams of crack cocaine and two handguns.

Minor also was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison. He pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of a firearm. He was under indictment and on bond at the time of his arrest.

U.S. Attorney Eric Melgren commended The Kansas City, Kan. Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, as well as Assistant U.S. Attorney Terra Morehead for their work on the case.
