LAWRENCE MAN SENTENCED TO FEDERAL PRISON FOR POSSESSION OF CHILD PORN

KANSAS CITY, KAN. – Richard McNett, 51, Lawrence, Kan., has been sentenced to 78 months without parole in federal prison for possessing child pornography, Acting U.S. Attorney Marietta Parker announced today.

In August 2008, McNett pleaded guilty to one count of possessing child pornography. In his plea, he admitted investigators found more than 13,000 images of child pornography in his possession.

The investigation began after McNett’s wife gave them floppy disks from his computer. She told investigators she was concerned because he was locking himself in a room with a computer and refusing to allow anyone in. Investigators eventually discovered 1,202 images of child pornography on diskettes, 7,740 images of child porn on McNett's hard drive, and 13,990 images of child porn on 11 compact disks. Using the Child Victim Identification Program, investigators identified 559 images of known victims.

Parker commended the Lawrence Police Department and Assistant U.S. Attorney Kim Martin for their work on the case.

The case is being prosecuted under the U.S. Department of Justice’s Project Safe Childhood, which aims to protect children from sexual predators. For more information, visit www.projectsafechildhood.gov
