GREENVILLE MAN SENTENCED TO 30 MONTHS
FOR POSSESSING CHILD PORNOGRAPHY

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 2008 - GRAND RAPIDS, MICH.
– Michael Warwick Doherty, 65, of Greenville, Michigan, has been sentenced to 30 months in prison for possessing child pornography, U.S. Attorney Charles R. Gross announced today. U.S. District Judge Robert Holmes Bell presided over the sentencing, and he also directed that Doherty serve ten years of supervised release after his prison sentence is complete. He was also ordered to pay a fine of $50,000.00.

Doherty was identified as an individual interested in child pornography through an undercover operation conducted by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. Postal Inspectors obtained and executed a search warrant for his residence. They then interviewed Doherty, who admitted that he possessed child pornography. Those admissions were confirmed by a forensic examination of Doherty’s home computer.

This case is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative designed to protect children from online exploitation and abuse. The U.S. Attorney’s Office, county prosecutor’s offices, Internet Crimes Against Children task force (ICAC), federal, state, and local law enforcement are working closely together to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children. The partners in Project Safe Childhood work to educate local communities about the dangers of online child exploitation, and to teach children how to protect themselves.
