FORMER STEELWORKERS LOCAL 2-1019 OFFICER
SENTENCED FOR EMBEZZLING UNION ASSETS

FRIDAY, MARCH 27, 2009 - GRAND RAPIDS, MI - A former financial secretary of Steelworkers Local 2-1019 was sentenced on March 25, 2009 to two years’ probation and ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $23,627.32 for embezzlement charges stemming from the theft of Local 2-1019 funds, U.S. Attorney Donald A. Davis announced today.

Davis was joined in the announcement by Ian Burg, Director of the Detroit District Office of the U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Labor-Management Standards (OLMS).

Lyndon Denney, 46, of Hastings, Michigan, entered a guilty plea on November 24, 2008, to embezzlement of union assets in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Michigan before Magistrate Judge Hugh W. Brenneman, Jr.

The information presented to the court at the time of the plea showed that between about March 2002 and January 2006, Denney, while acting as financial secretary of Steelworkers Local 2-1019, embezzled approximately $23,627.32 from Local 2-1019 by writing unauthorized checks to himself and third parties, allowing third parties to debit the local's checking account to pay his personal bills, and making unauthorized cash withdrawals from the local's savings account.

The case was investigated by OLMS Investigator Aisa Claybon. The case was prosecuted by U.S. Attorney Donald A. Davis.
