Federal Oil and Gas in Alaska

Oil and gas on Alaskan federal lands contributes to Alaska's economy, the United State's national security, and the well being of many knowing that oil and gas reserves are present in the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska.  Federal oil and gas has also been an invaluable resource to Alaskans for many years providing homes and businesses quality petroleum for electricity and heat.

Due to production demands, oil and gas operators must first obtain approval from BLM before the exploration and development of oil and gas resources.  The BLM administers oil and gas operation permits and production approvals for geophysical exploration, pad construction, to drill oil and gas wells, etc.  All exploration and development must be accomplished on leases or within units (a defined area of land defined by a surveyed boundary).

Oil companies, such as Union Oil of California and Marathon Oil Company, pay royalties to the BLM for the leasing of lands for oil and/or gas production. Royalties help pay for infrastructure, new pipelines for rural communities, and the upkeep of roads within Alaska.

There are five phases in the development of oil and gas on Federal lands:

Best Management Practices (BMPs)
