Scope

29 CFR 1926.750
  Scope

This standard is intended to protect employees from steel erection hazards when involved in the construction, alteration, or repair of:
  • single-story buildings
  • multi-story buildings
  • bridges
  • other structures where steel erection occurs. 
The requirements of this subpart apply to all employers engaged in steel erection unless otherwise specified. It does not cover electrical transmission towers, communication and broadcast towers, or tanks.

Examples of steel erection activities [29 CFR 1926.750(b)(1)]:
bolting structural steel, steel joists and metal buildings bracing structural steel, steel joists and metal buildings
burning structural steel, steel joists and metal buildings connecting structural steel, steel joists and metal buildings
guying structural steel, steel joists and metal buildings hoisting structural steel, steel joists and metal buildings
installing curtain walls installing metal decking
installing miscellaneous metals installing ornamental iron and similar materials
installing siding systems installing window walls
laying out structural steel, steel joists and metal buildings moving point-to-point while performing steel erection activities
placing structural steel, steel joists and metal buildings plumbing structural steel, steel joists and metal buildings
rigging structural steel, steel joists and metal buildings welding structural steel, steel joists and metal buildings


Activities covered by the steel erection standard when they occur during and as a part of steel erection activities [29 CFR 1926.750(b)(2)]:
bolting bracing
burning caulking
connecting dismantling
grinding guying
hoisting laying out
placing rigging
sealing welding
and all related activities for construction, alteration and/or repair of materials and assemblies such as:
anchoring devices bridge flooring
building specialties building equipment
cable stays castings
cold formed steel framing column covers
conveying systems crane rails and accessories
detention/security equipment and doors, windows and hardware doors
elevator beams enclosures and pockets
expansion control, including bridge expansion joint assemblies falsework for temporary supports of permanent steel members
fascias fences and gates
ferrous metals and alloys floor plates
gaskets glass
gratings grillage
handrails hardware
hydraulic structures joint fillers
ladders louvers
machinery and plant equipment, furnishings and special construction metal decking and raceway systems and accessories
metal panels and panel wall systems metal roofing and accessories
metal siding miscellaneous, architectural and ornamental metals and metal work
multi-purpose supports non-ferrous metals and alloys
penthouse enclosures perforated metals
permanent and temporary bents and towers plastics and synthetic composite materials
railings safety systems for steel erection
sealants and seals sheet metal fabrications
shelf racks skylights
slide bearings soffit panels
stairs steel and metal joists
stone and other non-precast concrete architectural materials mounted on steel frames structural cabling
structural metal framing and related bracing and assemblies structural steel
trench covers windows
