Photos from atop Mammoth Mountain, Long Valley Caldera

For its commanding view eastward across the Long Valley caldera, Mammoth Mountain provides the best overview in the area of the landscape created by volcanic activitiy and faulting of the Earth's crust over the past 3 million years. Clearly visible from this vantage point are landforms created by eruptions from the caldera and the Mono-Inyo Craters volcanic chain. These volcanic structures are situated between enormous faults that, on the west formed the eastern escarpment of the Sierra Nevada and on the east formed the western escarpment of the White Mountains with the intervening down-faulted block forming the Chalfant and Owens Valleys.

View toward the east from atop Mammoth Mountain, California View from Mammoth Mountain toward the east across Long Valley Caldera includes, from near to far, Town of Mammoth Lakes, the south moat, Lake Crowley, and the White Mountains in the far distance.
View toward the east-northeast from atop Mammoth Mountain, California View from Mammoth Mountain toward the east-northeast across Long Valley Caldera includes the Town of Mammoth Lakes, Mammoth Knolls, Glass Mountain, and the White Mountains in the far distance.
View toward the northeast from atop Mammoth Mountain, Long Valley Caldera, California View from Mammoth Mountain toward the northeast across Long Valley Caldera includes Earthquake Dome, Lookout Mountain, Bald Mountain, and the north caldera rim (upper right).
View toward the north from atop Mammoth Mountain, California View toward the north across the Long Valley Caldera includes the Mono-Inyo Craters volcanic chain and northwest caldera rim.
