Are There Any Public Lands For Sale?

The days of homesteading and obtaining Public land are gone.  Congress repealed the old settlement laws that allowed our ancestors to homestead or purchase public land for $1.25 per acre.

Under the authority of the Federal Land Policy and Management Act of 1976, BLM can sell public lands.  Any lands that are offered must be sold at fair market value, that is, at a price comparable to similar private lands.  Our district and field offices should be contacted for additional information.  The BLM California State Office does not maintain any type of mailing list regarding land sales.

At the present,  the Department of the Interior's policy for disposal of public lands is through the Federal Land Exchange Program, rather than competitive land sales.  Our Land Exchange Program identifies private lands, with resource values, that are conveyed to the Federal government for public lands.  The BLM field or district offices may maintain listings of lands that have been determined suitable for exchange purposes.
