WHAT IS THE
SANTA MONICA MOUNTAINS FUND?

The Fund was established in 1988 to support the education, science, and resource protection efforts of the National Park Service and the California State Parks in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area.

Although taxpayers’ dollars support the agencies’ critical core operations, those dollars are not enough to meet the level of public expectation and resource protection needs of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. The Fund works to help fill that gap in our Nation’s largest and most heavily visited urban national park.

VISION OF THE
SANTA MONICA MOUNTAINS FUND

The Santa Monica Mountains Fund promotes and assists the park agencies of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area in accomplishing their missions. Together they foster the protection and enjoyment of park resources by the public through education, research, improved facilities, citizen engagement and stewardship.

MOUNTAINS FUND

A long-term goal of the Fund is to build an endowment that ensures a perpetual source of funding support for the Santa Monica Mountains and fulfillment of the park’s high public purpose. The highest purposes for which the fund exists are the same as the park’s itself—“To promote the protection of park resources and provide for the public enjoyment and inspiration of the same.” Although the list is endless, these are a few special projects and programs that could benefit from your immediate support.

Did You Know?
A study that began in 2002 reveals a lion and his offspring are surviving in the Santa Monica Mountains. Radio collars track them crossing roads and navigating through open spaces. Their future is uncertain, but with conservation efforts, they may continue to make these mountains their home.
