General Information

Learn about your field of study and gain real world job experience while completing an internship with the National Park Service at Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area.

Some intern positions are available year round, others only during the school year.

The length of time for internships varies by position, some are 3, 4, or 6 month. Some are only 12 weeks full time, some are part time (usually at least two days per week) some are for the duration of the project. Length of time is specified on each intern position description. Some intern positions may require weekend work. Some intern positions will require a fingerprint and a background check.

A transportation reimbursement ($20 per day) is usually available. Shared housing is usually available for full time interns.

General Requirements

College students and recent college graduates are eligible.

Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Access or Excel may be required for some intern positions.

Interns must have a valid driver’s license and must have their own vehicle for their personal transportation to and from work. While at work, government vehicles are available for intern use within the scope of their position.

Checklist of application materials

  1. Cover letter stating internship you are applying for and how it will benefit your career.
  2. Dates you are available and whether or not you would need housing. (Housing is available for full time interns only.)
  3. Three reference contacts (email addresses or phone numbers, not reference letters).
  4. Statement that you understand the internship is unpaid and that you will be able to bring your own vehicle.
  5. Unofficial copy of your transcript.
  6. Be sure to include your email address so we can respond to you. We will not respond to an internet application service.
