From oak woodlands to grassland savannas to the coastal shore, the many diverse habitats in the Santa Monica Mountains make it an ideal location for resident and migrating birds. More than 380 species of birds, including shorebirds, song birds, woodpeckers, and raptors, can be seen year round in the Santa Monica Mountains. In Malibu Lagoon alone, more than 250 species have been recorded. Of the total number of birds that may be found within the recreation area, approximately one-third resides and breeds in the mountains.
