1. What activities may funds support?

Funds may support activities designed to deliver ongoing, intensive professional development. Activities may include, but are not limited to, the following: high-quality in-service and/or pre-service professional development activities; strategies for sustained collaboration among teachers and outside experts to improve instruction in American history; participation of teams of teachers in summer institutes and summer immersion activities; and school-based collaborative efforts among teachers to improve instruction in American history. In addition, grants may support development of programs to assist new history teachers in the classroom, such as mentoring and coaching by trained mentor teachers and team teaching.

2. What costs are allowable under the TAH grant?

Allowable costs means costs that are either permitted or not specifically prohibited for the TAH program. Some examples of allowable costs under the TAH program would be the following: contract payments for the historical content partners; pay for substitute teachers to cover participating teachers; stipends for participating teachers; and salaries for the project director.

For additional information on allowable and unallowable costs, please review the relevant OMB Circulars and EDGAR.

4. Is there a restricted indirect cost rate for the TAH program?

The Teaching American History program is not a restricted indirect cost rate program. You may use your LEA's approved negotiated indirect cost rate to charge indirect costs to the grant.

5. Where would I find my LEA's indirect cost rate?

The LEA's indirect cost rate is negotiated with the LEA's cognizant agency, which is often the State Education Agency (SEA). The SEA should have the negotiated indirect cost rate agreement on file, and your LEA's business often should have the negotiated indirect cost rate agreement on file.
