Seasonal Road Schedule
 

Primary roads such as US-441 (Newfound Gap Road), Little River Road, and the Cades Cove Loop Road are open year round, weather permitting. Click for information about temporary weather and construction related road closures of these roads.

Secondary roads are subject to seasonal closures. Seasonal  opening and closing dates for secondary roads are listed below:

• Balsam Mountain  
Open May 8-October 31, 2009.
Buses, RVs and motorhomes prohibited on this one-way, gravel road.

• Cades Cove Loop Road
Open all year from sunrise until sunset
This road will be closed to motor vehicles on Wednesday and Saturday mornings until 10:00 a.m. from May 6 - September 23, 2009 to allow bicyclists and pedestrians to enjoy the cove.

Clingmans Dome
Open April 1-November 30, 2009.

• Forge Creek Road
Closed for winter. Will reopen once muddy road conditions improve. Tentatively scheduled for mid-March, 2009.

• Heintooga Ridge Road
Open May 8-October 31, 2009.

Little Greenbrier
Open March 13-December 31, 2009.

Parson Branch
Tentatively opening in late spring-November 15, 2009.
Buses, RVs and motorhomes are prohibited on this one-way, gravel road.

Rich Mountain
Open March 13-November 15, 2009.
Buses, RVs and motorhomes are prohibited on this one-way road.

Roaring Fork
Open March 13-November 30, 2009.
Buses, RVs and motorhomes are prohibited on this road.

Roundbottom/Straight Fork
Open March 13-November 9, 2009.

Visitors can often spot bears in trees at the edges of forests.  

Did You Know?
Approximately 1,500 black bears live in the park. This equals a population density of approximately two bears per square mile. Bears can be found throughout the park, but are easiest to spot in open areas such as Cades Cove and Cataloochee Valley.
