"Caring for the Land" exhibit - Los Angeles County Fair

September  2008

Established in 1992, the "Caring for the Land" exhibit is a permanent outdoor education site managed by four cooperating government agencies, the Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest Service, the Los Angeles County Fire Department, and Metropolitan Water District of Southern California. The site it staffed for 3 weeks during the L.A. County Fair which has an attendance of 1.3 million visitors. The one-acre habitat site showcases native flora from five ecosystems common to southern California, an amphitheater, an information kiosk, a hosted fire lookout tower and free tree seedling. This year, the exhibit is again, part of National Public Land Day as visitors learned about land ethics, conservation, and public land diversity in southern California.

Interactive activities attract school groups and visitors to the site - log sawing and branding, free tree seedlings, water-cycle bracelet making, button making, Wild Horse and Burro program animals, wildlife displays, tree potting, Camp Smokey, and a guided nature trail.
