Special Events and Activites

All activities are free unless indicated otherwise and are held at Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge, 19255 SW Pacific Hwy, in Sherwood.  Directions.  Parking is available onsite or visitors can take Tri-Met bus route #12 directly to the Refuge. Trails and activities are fully accessible and visitors needing special assistance will be accommodated.

Spring Break Exploration Days---Touch, See, Smell, Ask Questions, Explore

Tuesday-Friday, March 24th-27th, 1:00pm-3:00pm

Need a Spring Break adventure?  Come discover the natural wonders of wildlife of the Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge. This family-oriented event will feature hands-on activities nature activities for kids. Join Refuge Volunteer Botanist, Ginny Maffitt for spring and summer plant walks. Discover what’s blooming and how native plants are vital to healthy wildlife habitats. Be prepared to be outside. We encourage you to bring cameras, plant identification guides if you have them, and nature journals if you like. Binoculars are always handy for those “watchable wildlife” moments. Migratory Songbird Festival

Saturday, May 16th, 10:00am-2:30pm

Come to Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge at 19255 SW Pacific Hwy in Sherwood. All ages are invited, rain or shine, for a day of outdoor activities, guided nature walks, live bird education show, native plant sale, hands-on educational crafts for kids, exhibits, presentations, entertainment, food, fun and more. The event and parking are free.

Nature Day Camp---"Survivor"

Monday-Friday, June 22nd-26th, 9:00am-3:00pm; **registration and fee required

Learn what it takes for animals to survive through exploration of animal adaptations.  This session will explore the natural world through discovery of animals, the signs they leave in nature, and the plants they eat.

In this session, learn simple things that everyone can do to take care of the environment.  Track the life of everyday trash and creatively reuse materials.  This class will foster sustainable behavior through fun, hands-on activities.

Bats of the Refuge--A Family Bat Outing

Friday, August 7th, 7:30pm-9:30pm; **reservations required

Learn about the natural history and conservation of bats from Elaine Murphy, a naturalist from Backyard Bird Shop.  Elaine's presentation will begin with a 45-minute slide show about bats followed by a evening nature walk to search for these creatures of the night.  All ages are invited to participate.  The event is free, but space is limited. Reservations are required and we will begin accepting reservations no earlier than July 1st.  Please register by submitting your name, the number of participants in your group, and your phone number to kim_strassburg@fws.gov. Maximum group size is 6.  Early registration requests will not be accepted.
