Joseph A. Esposito—Associate Under Secretary for International Affairs

Secretary Paige appointed Joseph A. Esposito as associate under secretary for international affairs at the Department of Education in May 2003. Preceding this appointment, Esposito was a senior adviser to the Deputy Secretary.

In his position, Esposito oversees international education policy issues and directs the coordination of the Department's programs and activities in this area, including the work of the international affairs staff. He is the principal contact in the Department for matters related to the United States rejoining UNESCO, a policy decision announced by President George W. Bush on September 12, 2002.

Esposito previously served at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the U.S. Agency for International Development. He also was a writer for several newspapers and other publications, and worked on the staff of the Senate of Pennsylvania.

Mr. Esposito holds undergraduate and graduate degrees from The Pennsylvania State University and graduate degrees from George Mason University and Georgetown University. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
