March 23, 2009 Contact:    Sarah Beckwith    307-347-5207 Bighorn Basin RMP Scoping Report and Other Supporting Documents Now Available The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) announced today that new documents relating to the Bighorn Basin Resource Management Plan (RMP) Revision Project are now available. Documents include the Analysis of the Management Situation, Scoping Report, and Recreation and Travel Management Workshops Summary. Analysis of the Management Situation: This is the current management situation of the Cody and Worland Field Office areas. It evaluates the capability and condition of the resources and identifies management opportunities. Scoping Report: BLM conducted its first formal public participation period, including six public workshops, from Oct. 17-Nov. 24, 2008. This report documents public outreach efforts and summarizes comments received and issues raised during the public participation period. Recreation and Travel Management Workshops Summary: Additional public meetings focusing on recreation and travel management were held in Jan., 2009. This summary compiles information received during these meetings. "I appreciate the residents of the Bighorn Basin for taking the time to provide us with the input found in both the Scoping Report and the Recreation and Travel Management Workshops Summary," said BLM Wind River/Bighorn Basin District Manager Eddie Bateson. "I look forward to working with our local cooperators to ensure that we capture public input for future management of our public lands." Bighorn Basin RMP Project Lead Caleb Hiner reminds the public that all comments received during the RMP process will be reviewed to ensure key issues and concerns have not been overlooked. "Public involvement is an essential and required part of BLM's planning process, and I encourage the public to communicate issues and concerns about the future of public lands within the Bighorn Basin," Hiner said. The BLM manages more land – 258 million acres – than any other Federal agency.  This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western States, including Alaska.  The Bureau, with a budget of about $1 billion, also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation.  The BLM’s multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.  The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands. - BLM -
