About the Energy Program
The Vernal Field Office oversees energy-related activities on 3.8 million acres of Federal mineral lands (including 1.3 million acres of National Forest Service lands) and post-lease mineral operations conducted on Indian mineral lands. The Forest Service is responsible for mining claim activities on National Forest Service lands.
Field Office responsibilities include permitting oil and gas wells and subsequent activities, oversight of drilling and production operations, inspection and enforcement, abandonment operations approval, and reservoir management to protect public and Native American interests in oil and gas resources.
Some of the goals are to
- improve permitting, authorization, and inspection procedures;
- form partnerships with members of the mineral industry to enhance environmental awareness and/or operating procedures; and
- ensure taxpayers, Northern Ute Indian Tribe, and Individual Indian Mineral Owners receive a fair return for the use of their mineral resources.
