PHOENIX, Ariz. -- Assistance checks are being sent to Maricopa County residents who applied for federal and state disaster aid following the September 14-23, 1999 monsoon storms, according to disaster recovery officials.
Since President Clinton declared Maricopa County a major disaster area on October 15, 1999, some 286 individuals and businesses have registered for various disaster aid programs offered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) and the Arizona Division of Emergency Management (ADEM). Programs in place to help people begin to recover from the devastation include temporary housing assistance, low-interest disaster loans, and individual and family grants.
Under the FEMA temporary disaster housing program, a number of victims have been found eligible to receive assistance amounting to more than $40,478. The U.S. Small Business Administration has approved over $283,000 in low interest loans. As processing continues, more victims are expected to be found eligible for the different programs available.
The deadline to register for assistance programs is December 14, 1999. If you sustained damage to your primary residence or business as a result of the severe storms between September 14 and September 23, 1999, you may call (toll-free) 1-800-462-9029. Those with hearing- or speech-impairments may call TTY 1-800-462-7585. Application specialists take calls Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Mountain Standard Time.
