Cape Town, 2010 Soccer World Cup

$772 million plus in 2010 Opportunities in Cape Town

As Cape Town prepares for the 2010 Soccer World Cup, large infrastructure projects within the city offer opportunities exceeding $772 million for U.S. business. These include: demolition and reconstruction of the Green Point Stadium, expenditures on roads and other transport infrastructure such as rail and airport services.

2010 World Cup

With an investment of over $386 million, the Green Point Stadium will be transformed into a completely new 68,000 seat, all-weather, multi-purpose, environmentally sustainable, technologically advanced, world-class Stadium. Western Cape’s Public Transport System

As part of preparations for 2010, a plan has been presented for a fully integrated transport solution for Cape Town and the Provincial Government of the Western Cape. The multimillion dollar restructuring will integrate rail, bus and minibus taxi transport. The first phase of the project will cost the Province approximately $24.3 million with significant additional expenditures highly likely. The project involves an intelligent transport system (ITS) encompassing route monitoring, fleet management and passenger information and an integrated fare management system, including an integrated ticketing system. Major investment and technical expertise is required in infrastructure, operations and system management to support this project. Cape Town International Airport

Approximately $186 million will be invested in the facelift of Cape Town International Airport by the year 2009. Upgrades will include a new terminal, an elevated road, a plaza for public transport, air bridges and a multi-story parking structure. The 132 kV Foreshore Switching Station project is part of a phased plan to replace the ageing switchgear and power transformers at Roggebaai switching station and to improve the reliability of the supply in the Central Business District (CBD). The current estimated cost for the project is $21 million. Provision for this project has already been included in the City’s capital budget. The South African Police Services are procuring high tech security equipment that will be linked to Global Information Systems (GIS) and satellites. These include: A Command Vehicle; Downlink Equipment, Mobile Police Station; Push-to-Talk (PTT) Radios & Closed circuit televisions (CCTVs). The City has included 200 additional Pan-tilt and Zoom (PTZ) CCTV cameras for safety and security within the City of Cape Town, for the CBD and Green Point areas for an estimated $1.2 million. A further $1.5 million is estimated for security infrastructure requirements for 85 Personal Vision Assistants (PVAs) with high-quality color capabilities. Tourism: The 2010 FIFA World Cup presents a number of good tourism development opportunities in Cape Town and the surrounding area. These include: A $2.7 million destination tourism marketing strategy, which aims to market Cape Town and the Western Cape as the preferred destination for 2010 Soccer World Cup spectators and participating teams. A $1.4 million Film Strategic Plan involving media workshops and the development of visual archives and information, and development of Cape Town & Western Cape Film Festival.
