The Salt Lake Field Office participates with interagency fire partners within eleven counties in northwestern Utah, covering over 3 million acres. The field office fire program is a complex organization with responsibilities in suppression, planning, fuel hazard reduction, aviation, mitigation, and prevention. Eighty-six percent of the State's population lives within the field office boundaries.
New home and urban development is an intensifying issue. Developments are pushing farther out, creating bedroom communities with limited fire protection. As a result, the urban interface becomes a threat to both the community and nearby public lands. Response time to incidents is often hampered by traffic. Aviation resources, in combination with the ground resources, have proven critical to successfully containing fires in this complex environment.
