Public Lands administered by the St. George Field Office are a regional and national outdoor recreation destination. The convergence of three physiographic regions—Great Basin, Mojave, and Colorado Plateau—creates an extraordinarily scenic and diverse landscape. The presence of the Virgin River, a tributary of the Colorado, has created an area with a rich biological, geological, and cultural history.
Outdoor recreation opportunities in the St. George Field Office are as diverse and challenging as the desert landscape. Activities range from casual sightseeing and hiking to more physically demanding activities such as mountain biking, ATV riding, rock climbing, horseback riding, and canyoneering.
The St. George Field Office experiences a high number of seasonal visitors with the busy seasons being spring and fall. The spring season begins in February and lasts through May, with the fall season running from September through November. Summer visitation is mainly associated with touring the nearby National Parks: Zion, Bryce Canyon and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.
To balance recreation use with the long term protection of the area’s outstanding recreational, natural, and scenic resources, the St. George Field Office has constructed and signed a large number of recreational trails and trailheads, for a variety of recreational users.
