Purchaser Resources

Welcome purchasers!

EPEAT is now the easiest way to specify affordable, high-performance, environmentally preferable computer desktops, laptops, and monitors. As of the EPEAT standard's one year anniversary, July 2007, over 20 manufacturers had registered more than 600 products and the EPEAT standard has been successfully incorporated into purchasing documents worth more than US$65 billion.

EPEAT is a required specification for federal purchasers and is increasingly used by state and local government purchasers and private sector IT managers to 'green' their electronics purchasing.

The specific resources at right, and the model specification language below should help get you started using EPEAT.

If you would like to talk with someone directly about the best way to incorporate EPEAT into the purchasing process, please e-mail Sarah O'Brien at sarah.obrien@greenelectronicscouncil.org.

Finally, please let us know when you do spec EPEAT, so that we can add your name to the list of purchasers greening their IT through the EPEAT system!

Federal Government Purchasing Resources

The Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR) require that federal "agencies must ensure that they meet at least 95% of their annual acquisition requirement for electronic products with Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT)-registered electronic products, unless there is no EPEAT standard for such products."

The Federal Electronics Challenge

The Federal Electronics Challenge (FEC) has prepared a number of resources for federal purchasers, including an EPEAT fact sheet that explains how EPEAT can help federal agencies meet their FEC obligations. The FEC is a voluntary partnership program that encourages federal facilities and agencies to:

  • Purchase greener electronic products.
  • Reduce impacts of electronic products during use.
  • Manage obsolete electronics in an environmentally safe way.

The FEC website has many valuable electronics resources for federal purchasers.
