PEORIA, Ill. -- Providing enhanced workplace safety for workers is the goal of a new partnership signed between the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Greater Peoria Contractors and Suppliers Association. "This agreement provides an opportunity for the partners to come together and build on the value of safety and health for construction workers throughout the greater Peoria area," said George Yoksas, OSHA's acting area director in Peoria. "We are confident the cooperative effort will help reduce injuries and fatalities." OSHA Strategic Partnerships for Worker Safety and Health are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao’s ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative relationships with trade associations, labor organizations and employers. OSHA's area office in Peoria is working on the formation of this partnership. The primary goal of the partnership is to aid local contractors in remaining below the national average for injuries and illnesses in their industry. A key feature is the development of a multi-step program leading to the achievement of silver and gold level status for outstanding employers in workplace safety and health.
