President Bush Announces Intent to Nominate Edward Mcpherson as Under Secretary of Education

President Bush has announced his intent to nominate Edward McPherson of Texas to be under secretary of education at the U.S. Department of Education.

Mr. McPherson currently serves as the chief financial officer at the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He previously served as president of InterSolve Group, a company he founded in 1989, and as executive vice president and chief financial officer for SunAmerica Corporation and the First Republic Bank Corporation. Mr. McPherson served as a member of the U.S. Navy and is a graduate of Williams College, and earned his master's degree from The George Washington University.

The under secretary is key member of the secretary's executive team and serves as a principal policy advisor to Secretary Paige on all major program and management initiatives, including budget, strategic planning and accountability issues, as well as the historic No Child Left Behind Act.

Regarding the appointment, Secretary Paige said: "Ted McPherson is a proven leader with a track record of success in both the private and public sectors. I look forward to him joining the Department, and have no doubt he will be a valuable asset in our continued efforts to be responsible stewards of the federal taxpayer's dollar and ensure that all students have access to a quality education."
