Partner Profile
Starbucks Corporation is a multinational coffee and coffeehouse company whose environmental mission statement declares it "is committed to a role of environmental leadership in all facets of our business." In 2004, Starbucks set out to understand more about the risks associated with climate change and to evaluate its contribution to global warming. This effort dovetailed with earlier work the company had done to assess its environmental footprint. Starbucks' initial climate inventory was limited to the major areas of retail, coffee roasting, administrative operations and its distribution network. Starbucks believes it is the company's environmental responsibility to continue to find new and innovative ways to reduce its emissions. In an effort to achieve this, Starbucks established an emissions reduction target and detailed appropriate metrics to measure ongoing performance in 2005. As a result of the company's initial inventory, Starbucks also joined the Green Power Partnership and began purchasing enough green power to cover five percent of its retail energy needs in North America. Expanding on the success of its commitment in 2005, Starbucks has increased its green power purchase to 20 percent and become a member of the Green Power Leadership Club.
