Group to use $2.5 million grant to spread the word on choice and tutoring services

The Black Alliance for Educational Options (BAEO) has received a $2.5 million five-year grant to continue its outreach to parents about their options under the No Child Left Behind Act, including public school choice and free academic services such as tutoring, U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige announced today.
"Parents all over the country, especially in some of our urban areas, are asking about No Child Left Behind," Paige said. "BAEO has done a tremendous job in reaching out to parents, making it plain and easy to understand how families can benefit from the school choice and tutoring services now available to them."
The grant will be used to further the activities of BAEO's Project Clarion, which is an outreach and communications campaign designed to educate parents about NCLB, public school choice, tutoring, and charter schools; to motivate them to exercise their rights; and to connect parents to educational options in their communities. BAEO hopes to reach some 30,000 eligible parents in cities such as Milwaukee, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Detroit, Richmond, Atlanta, Tampa and Dayton.
The grant is from the Fund for the Improvement of Education (FIE), which supports nationally significant programs and projects to improve the quality of education, and to help all students meet challenging standards. Activities funded by FIE grants provide professional, curriculum and assessment development, and demonstration programs aimed at improving elementary and secondary education.
The Black Alliance for Educational Options, headquartered in Washington, D.C., is a national nonprofit membership organization whose mission is to actively support parental choice so that families can be empowered to increase educational options for children.
