U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige today issued the following statement on the introduction of the American History and Civics Act by U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander and U.S. Rep. Roger Wicker:

"I applaud Sen. Alexander and Rep. Wicker for the introduction of this exciting legislation. Their efforts will no doubt serve as a catalyst for a renewed interest in and commitment to the study of American history and civics. While proficiency in reading and math among our nation's school age children is imperative, we cannot overlook the need to engage more teachers and students in study of our nation's rich history. Now more than ever, a knowledge and understanding of our nation's foundation is vital."
