KIMBERLEY EDELIN FREEMAN NAMED TO ADVISORY COUNCIL ON EDUCATION STATISTICS

Kimberley Edelin Freeman, executive director of the Frederick D. Patterson Research Institute of The United Negro College Fund, has been named to the Advisory Council on Education Statistics by U.S. Secretary of Education Richard W. Riley.

"I am so pleased that Dr. Freeman has agreed to join the Advisory Council on Education Statistics," said Riley. "Her commitment to improving education opportunities and availability will be of great benefit to the council's work."

The council reviews general policies for the operation of the National Center for Education Statistics and is responsible for establishing standards to insure that statistics and analyses disseminated by the center are of high quality and not subject to political influence.

Freeman, who has been at the institute since 1997, previously was a research assistant and instructor of education at the University of Michigan.

"My appointment to the council is a great honor," said Freeman. "The data produced by NCES are an invaluable resource, which helps to improve education outcomes and experiences for all students. Through my service, I hope to continue the important work of NCES.

Freeman will serve on the council for a three-year term.
