Craig B. Luigart, the U.S. Education Department's chief information officer since 1999, has been honored for his leadership in the information technology field.
Luigart has been selected as one of the business world's Premier 100 IT Leaders by IDG's Computerworld, an information services company for the IT leader community. Of all the honorees, Luigart was also the featured Visionary CIO of the year. The Premier 100 IT Leaders award recognizes individuals who have had a positive impact on their organizations through technology.
In addition, Federal Computer Week picked Luigart as one of the Federal 100 winners -- the top executives from government, industry and academia who had the greatest impact on the government information systems community in 2001. An independent panel of judges chose the Lexington, Ky., native because of the difference he made in the way the department develops, acquires and manages information technology.
"I want to congratulate Craig for these honors, which I think symbolize the outstanding management team here at the Department of Education," said U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige. "Innovative leadership like this enables us to carry out our mission to promote excellence in American education and leave no child behind."
As Education's CIO, Luigart oversees the department's nearly $1 billion in IT investments, leading more than 500 information technology and information management staff members and contractors. Luigart also serves as co-chair of the federal CIO Council's e-government subcommittee and as the panel's representative on Disability and Accessibility.
