U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings today made the following statement recognizing the 50th anniversary of the Little Rock Nine:

Today, we remember the courage and conviction of nine African American students who walked into a school and changed history. Fifty years ago, the Little Rock Nine braved violence, ridicule, and prejudice to claim their right to a quality education. Their heroic actions became a symbol that moved the nation and drove forward the movement for integrated education.

It's hard to imagine what it was like for these young men and women to walk into Central High School, guarded by the U.S. Army as they passed mobs of angry protestors. But we're grateful they did. We continue to be inspired by the bravery and vision of the Little Rock Nine as we work to expand access to a quality education for every American.
