The Phi Delta Kappa/Gallup survey released today indicates the clear and growing support of the American people for increased accountability and high academic standards as a means to improve the nation's schools.

Accountability and the use of good annual tests for measuring whether our children are learning are the cornerstones of President Bush's education agenda. I am pleased that the majority of Americans surveyed believe that the administration's efforts are on the right track, and that President Bush has the confidence of the American people, regardless of their political affiliation in his plans to improve student achievement.

The public's consensus that America needs better schools should help guide policy makers at the national, state and local levels of government. By working together we can ensure that no child is left behind. As the Members of Congress return to Washington, D.C., I look forward to working with the conference committee to complete their work and move ahead with President Bush's plan for improving our schools.
