President Bush Names 21 Individuals to President's Advisory Board on Historically Black Colleges and Universities

The White House Office of the Press Secretary announced Feb. 1 that President Bush intends to appoint 21 individuals to serve on the President's Board of Advisors on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

Authorized under Executive Order 130321, the board is charged with identifying ways to strengthen the role of HBCUs and helping to provide quality education opportunities for minority and disadvantaged students. The board members will: (1) advise the U.S. secretary of education on the progress in closing the achievement and attainment gaps between African Americans and other groups of students; (2) issue an annual report to the president on the participation of HBCUs in federal programs; (3) recommend ways to increase the federal role in strengthening the academic programs and resources of HBCUs; and (4) report to the president on how to increase the role of the private sector in strengthening HBCUs.

Members selected to serve on the board include:

"Creating education opportunities for America??s minority and disadvantaged students is one of this department??s main objectives," U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige said. "I look forward to working with the outstanding men and women President Bush has selected to help close the achievement gap between minority students and their peers and to expand their higher education opportunities."

The individuals selected by President Bush for this advisory board include representatives of historically black colleges and universities, other institutions of higher education, business and financial institutions, and private foundations. They will work together as a group to put forward recommendations and reports to the president.
